Splash (2024) is a sculptural light pavilion shaped like a falling raindrop just before it hits the earth — a moment of semi-suspended light within the landscape. Inspired by South Africa’s climate and Cape Town’s ongoing relationship with water scarcity, the work reflects on how precious and life-giving water is in a region shaped by long dry seasons and recurring periods of severe drought.

Visitors are invited to step inside, sit back, and slow down within the softly glowing interior. Light is used not as spectacle, but as something held and contained — encouraging pause, presence and quiet connection.

The form recalls the familiar “onion dome” seen across world architecture, creating a recognisable silhouette that reads clearly from a distance.

Splash first appeared at AfrikaBurn in 2024, where it was widely embraced and nicknamed “space garlic”, “Hershey’s Kiss” and “the onion”.

It is reflective and luminous both day and night.

The @burndarlings are a South African artist duo, Mari Schroeder and Wim Schroeder. They create functional art and installations using everyday objects and repurposed materials, including wood, metal, glass and resin. Their work integrates light, wind-driven kinetic elements, and flexible, responsive structures to create playful, unexpected forms that shape atmosphere and human interaction.

They are the custodians of Quaggasmilk, a 100% solar-electric art car built from a 1950s milk delivery truck.

They have exhibited at AfrikaBurn and other outdoor festivals with works including Launchpad (AfrikaBurn 2023), Splash (AfrikaBurn 2024, Aftermath 2024), Twist (AfrikaBurn 2025, Decompression 2025), and Spacenet (Summercamp 2024 and 2025). Their next AfrikaBurn artwork, Pendulum, is currently under construction.

They work from their Darling Creative Hub, based in Darling, just north of Cape Town.
